History

Although settlers reached the Democrat area of Mills County around 1878, this burial ground was not opened until the early 1900s; its earliest recorded grave is that of one-year-old Lee Ella Deen, who died in November 1904. In February 1905 J.L. Chancellor deeded three acres to the citizens of the Democrat and Rock Springs communities for use as a public cemetery. Early interments include children lost to the worldwide influenza epidemic and veterans of the Civil War and both World Wars. The Texas Historical Commission placed a marker at the site in 2000.
