History

Hopewell Cemetery lies west of Stoneburg in eastern Montague County, in an area settled by ranchers and farmers in the 1870s; its earliest burials may date to that decade. It grew up beside the Hopewell School (District No. 46), and on December 11, 1900, Montague County sold part of the school land to the citizens of the Hopewell community for $40 to enlarge the cemetery. Community members fenced the grounds in December 1911, and the cemetery is still cared for by a local association.
