History
Esperanza began about 1879 when William Spiller established a tobacco farm and sought a post office, and the community was first known as Ada. In 1899 Spiller renamed it Esperanza, Spanish for 'hope,' expecting the settlement would help his tobacco venture succeed. Though the tobacco business soon failed, the community grew to about 100 residents with several businesses by 1915, and a Texas Historical Commission marker was later placed at the townsite.
