History

Danville-Shepherd Hill Cemetery is the historic burial ground of Danville, a once-thriving Montgomery County town platted in 1848 that faded to a ghost town after it refused right-of-way to the railroad in the 1870s and lost its people to nearby Willis. The cemetery holds roughly 195 graves dating from about 1850, arranged in Protestant, Catholic, and Black sections, and its name honors landowner William W. Shepperd. A state historical marker at the gate commemorates the town and one of its early residents, Alamo defender Jonathan Lindley.
