History

Wilburton Cemetery, also called Tamina Cemetery, is the burial ground of Tamina, one of Texas's oldest freedom colonies, founded by newly freed African Americans in 1871 just south of present-day The Woodlands. The original settlers, among the small minority of freedmen able to buy land, built homes, churches, a school, and a store while working in Montgomery County's timber industry. The cemetery and a Texas historical marker honor these founding families and their descendants.
