Lone Star College began in 1972, when voters in the Aldine, Spring and Humble school districts created North Harris County College, which opened with 613 students. As neighboring districts such as Tomball, New Caney and Conroe joined in the following decades, new colleges opened in Kingwood, Tomball and Montgomery County, and in 1991 the district took the name North Harris Montgomery Community College District. The CyFair college followed in 2003, and in November 2007 trustees adopted the name Lone Star College System after an online vote, a nod to Montgomery County's claim as the birthplace of the Lone Star flag. In 2010 the system opened LSC-University Park in the former Compaq headquarters complex, and today it enrolls tens of thousands of students across seven colleges plus online programs.
