History

Wheatville Cemetery survives from the vanished community of Wheatville, settled before 1852 and named for original land grantee William Wheat. Though burials likely began in the 1850s, the earliest documented interment is John Samuel Sheppard, who died in 1863, and the oldest marked grave is that of I. H. Betts in 1872. The Sheppard family buried here was connected to U.S. Senator Morris Sheppard, who was born in the area in 1875.
