History
The National WASP WWII Museum sits at Avenger Field near Sweetwater, where the Women Airforce Service Pilots trained during World War II. The museum was established in 2003 by former WASP Deanie Bishop Parrish and her daughter Nancy Parrish and opened in May 2005 in a 1929 hangar. Avenger Field became the first air base in history to train only women pilots after the first WASP class arrived on February 21, 1943; of more than 25,000 applicants, 1,074 graduated, ferrying aircraft, towing gunnery targets, and flight-testing repaired planes, and the museum's campus now includes two hangars with exhibits and historic training aircraft.
