History

The Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures and Education Center in Corpus Christi grew from a collection assembled by Corpus Christi native Billie Trimble Chandler, who taught American children on U.S. bases in Japan for nearly seventeen years beginning in the late 1950s. She gathered thousands of artifacts and commissioned works of art that became the museum's core when she returned to Texas. Originally opened in the 1960s and known as the Museum of Oriental Cultures from 1982, it took its current name after relocating to the city's museum district in 1996 and holds the world's largest display of Hakata dolls.
