History
The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History interprets the natural and cultural history of the Texas Coastal Bend, and became widely known for its association with full-scale replicas of Christopher Columbus's ships. In 1992 the reproductions of the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria arrived in Texas as part of a U.S. tour marking the 500th anniversary of Columbus's voyage, secured through a 50-year lease from the Spanish government aided by a $1.1 million gift from developer Dusty Durrill. Years of weathering caused severe rot; the city ultimately dismantled the deteriorated Pinta and Santa Maria, while volunteers worked to save the Nina.
