History
The USS Lexington Museum on the Bay in Corpus Christi is set aboard CV-16, a World War II-era Essex-class aircraft carrier nicknamed the 'Blue Ghost' because her gray Measure 21 paint appeared blue at a distance. Commissioned in February 1943, the carrier served throughout the Pacific War, often as flagship of Admiral Marc Mitscher's Fast Carrier Task Force, and earned 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation before decommissioning in 1991. Towed to Corpus Christi in 1992 and opened to the public that October, she was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003 and now offers self-guided tours through more than 100 exhibits and restored aircraft.
