History

This stone vault is associated with the pioneering Johnson family of Palo Pinto County, brothers William Whipple Johnson and Harvey Johnson, whose Johnson League Ranch lay north of Gordon. The Johnsons were among the first settlers of nearby Strawn and were instrumental in the 1880s discovery of the coal that built the mining town of Thurber. The fort-like rock mausoleum stands as a landmark to the family's early role in the county's ranching and mining history.
