History

Antioch Cemetery lies about six miles southeast of Carthage and was long maintained by the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, founded by five charter members in 1871. Although land was not formally set aside for burials until 1875, the oldest gravestone dates to 1849. The surrounding Antioch community, which had a school, church, and cemetery by the 1930s, faded after its school consolidated with Carthage in the 1940s, leaving the cemetery as one of its last remnants.
