History

The Carthage City Cemetery serves the seat of Panola County, which was laid out in 1848 after landowner Jonathan Anderson donated 100 acres for a new town at the county's geographic center. Located just off the downtown square between St. Mary's Street and State Highway 10, it adjoins the older Odd Fellows Cemetery, and together the two grounds hold more than 5,000 graves. Both remain active cemeteries and include the resting places of many of Carthage's earliest citizens.
