History

Walker Cemetery, also called Walker Memorial Cemetery, is a historically African American burial ground within the Carthage city limits. Its oldest marked grave is that of London Wilson, who died in 1895 at age 52, and the grounds hold a large number of unmarked graves. Long tended by caretakers such as Jack Reese and Cleveland Brown, the cemetery observes an annual Memorial Day on the Saturday before May 31, often paired with a church service.
