History
Deadwood Cemetery grew out of a family burial ground begun on the LaGrone farm in 1847, when Christeena, wife of pioneer settler Adam LaGrone, died; Adam was laid beside her nine years later. The LaGrones had settled the area in 1837 on a large Mexican land grant near Socogee Creek, making Deadwood one of the earliest communities in eastern Panola County. Although the tract did not appear in county deed records as a public cemetery until 1859, community members were buried here earlier. Still maintained by descendants of pioneer families, the cemetery received a Texas Historical Commission marker in 1988.
