History

Jim Reeves Memorial Park is a one-acre, tree-shaded plot three miles east of Carthage on U.S. Highway 79, marking the grave of country-music legend James Travis 'Gentleman Jim' Reeves, a Panola County native born near Carthage in 1923 who died in a plane crash in 1964. A life-sized statue of the singer, an early member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, stands over the grave, and the State of Texas erected a historical marker at the site. His wife Mary is buried alongside him, and his favorite dog, Cheyenne, was interred within the memorial's concrete circle in 1967. Thousands of visitors from across the United States and abroad have come to the memorial.
