History

Historic Fort Stockton preserves the site of a U.S. Army frontier post established in 1858 as Camp Stockton near Comanche Springs, garrisoned to protect travelers on the San Antonio-to-California route. The permanent Fort Stockton replaced the camp in 1867 and troops remained until it was abandoned in 1886. Four original buildings survive—three officers' quarters and the guard house—while rebuilt barracks and kitchens house a fort museum and visitor center, and volunteers reenact frontier military life each October during Living History Days.
