History
The John Howland Wood House sits high on a bluff overlooking Copano Bay in Bayside and was built in 1875 by contractors Viggo Kohler and Hugo Heldenfels for John Howland Wood, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto, his wife Nancy Clark and their twelve children. The mansion combines a Greek Revival plan with exuberant high Victorian Italianate detail, including a two-tiered full-height portico, bracketed eaves and a widow's walk, and it operated as a hotel for some five decades. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and is the only house in Refugio County on the register.
