History

This St. Mary's cemetery is a surviving remnant of St. Mary's of Aransas, a port town founded on Copano Bay in 1850 that became a busy shipping point for hides, tallow, cattle, and cotton before it was ruined by late-19th-century storms. When developers laid out the nearby town of Bayside in 1908, they acquired and subdivided the abandoned St. Mary's townsite, annexing it in 1909 and 1910; the old cemetery and a few houses are among the few reminders of the vanished port.
