History

Mount Vernon Cemetery grew from land given by Henry Warren Payne (1833-1898) and W.M. Conner for a church and burial ground. A building used as both church and school was raised in 1871, and the first marked grave, an infant son of James E. and Ann Payne Asby, dates to 1872. The associated Mt. Vernon Baptist Church formally organized in 1888, and additional land from the Louisiana and Texas Lumber Company later enlarged the grounds.
