History

Little Mississippi Cemetery is the surviving trace of a vanished community of the same name near Owensville in central Robertson County. The settlement was founded in the 1830s by Southern cotton farmers, most of them not slaveholders, who had left hard economic times in the older states, and residents worshipped and schooled at nearby Mount Vernon. The community faded after the rise of Owensville, Calvert, and Franklin and the arrival of railroads that bypassed it, so that little remained by 1900.
