History

Camp Springs Cemetery is tied to the vanished Scurry County community of Camp Springs, where reliable springs and lush grass long made the site a favored camping place used by Native peoples and later by travelers, including troops under Robert E. Lee who camped there in 1856. Sheepherder W. H. Camp settled on Spring Creek in 1878, and a post office opened in 1891 under the name Afra before the town became Camp Springs. The community peaked at about fifty residents between 1920 and 1940 before declining, and the cemetery holds graves dating from the late 1800s.
