History

Cottonwood Flat Cemetery sits in the northeastern corner of Scurry County near the Fisher County line and dates to the early 1890s. County records are unclear on its exact founding, but by the time a document was filed in 1898 the ground had already been used as a cemetery for nearly a decade; Joseph Clegg, who died in July 1889 while chasing a stray cow, was the third person buried there. In 1898 Jasper Helms purchased surrounding sections of land, and his descendants still own the property around the cemetery, which remains in use.
