History

The Houston & Texas Central Railway began pushing north from Houston in 1856, and a branch line reached Albany in 1881 after running roughly 177 miles through towns such as Hico, Dublin, and Cisco. As the line's terminus, Albany boomed into a shipping point for cattle, buffalo bones, and building stone. The company extended track toward Stamford beginning in 1900 and was absorbed into the Missouri, Kansas and Texas (Katy) system in 1914. The Texas Historical Commission erected the marker in 1975.
