History

The Silverio de la Pena Drugstore and Post Office at Main and Lopez streets in Rio Grande City was built in 1886 to designs by master mason Heinrich "Enrique" Portscheller. It is one of the best examples of the German- and French-influenced brick architecture that Portscheller brought to the Rio Grande border region. It was listed on the National Register in 1980 and documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey.
