The health science center grew out of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, which Fort Worth osteopathic physicians chartered as a private nonprofit school on June 15, 1966. Its first class of 20 students arrived in October 1970 and studied at Fort Worth Osteopathic Hospital and in a small house and garage, and in 1971 classes moved into a converted bowling alley, the Taverner Bowling Alley. A 1975 state law turned TCOM into a public medical school overseen by the regents of North Texas State University, now the University of North Texas. In 1993 lawmakers renamed it the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth as a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences joined the medical school, and more schools followed: public health in 1999, health professions in 2004, pharmacy in 2013 and nursing in 2023. Its campus now covers about 33.5 acres in Fort Worth's Cultural District. In July 2025 the institution adopted the name UNT Health Fort Worth, and TCOM, the first osteopathic medical school in Texas, remains known for training primary-care physicians.
