Sacred Heart parish in Abilene was established in 1891, and this larger church at 1633 S. 8th Street was begun after the congregation acquired the property in 1926. Designed by noted San Antonio architect Leo M. J. Dielmann in the Spanish Colonial Revival style with Moorish elements, the building was completed in April 1931. Regarded as Abilene's least-altered pre-1940s religious structure, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
