History
The Merkel Area Historical Museum preserves the history of Merkel, a northwestern Taylor County town founded in the early 1880s as the Texas and Pacific Railway pushed west; the settlement was first nicknamed 'Windmill Town' for the windmills that drew its water from the arid plains. Located at 1501 N. 7th Street near Interstate 20, the roughly 13,000-square-foot museum displays exhibits on pioneer days, the Civil War, local veterans, schools, law enforcement, and natural history.
