History

The Dyess Linear Air Park is an outdoor aviation museum along the main road of Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, displaying more than 30 historic U.S. military aircraft spanning World War II to the present, many once based at Dyess. The base was established in 1942 as Abilene Army Air Base and renamed for Bataan Death March survivor Lt. Col. William Dyess; many of the display aircraft originated in a 1980s effort to create a Texas museum of military history. The base developed the air park in 1986 and dedicated it in 1991, and visitors check in at the Dyess Memorial Center.
