History

Old Colony Cemetery, also called Eagle Colony or Colony Hill, is among the oldest burial grounds in Taylor County. It is tied to an ill-fated German colonization effort of about 1867, when roughly fifteen families settled along Lytle Creek hoping to build a town called Eagle City; a fraudulent promoter, failing crops, and drought scattered most of the colonists by 1878. The oldest marked grave dates to 1889, but dozens of unmarked graves are thought to hold the colony's early dead.
