History

The 14-story Hilton Hotel in downtown San Angelo, now the Cactus Hotel, opened on May 31, 1929, as the fourth hotel in Conrad Hilton's expanding Texas chain. Designed in the Italian Renaissance style by architect Anton F. Korn and built by lumber magnate B. B. Hail, it remains the tallest building in the city. After Hilton's financial troubles it was sold and renamed the Cactus Hotel in 1934, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
