History

The Austin History Center occupies the former Austin Public Library building, a Renaissance Revival structure of Cordova cream limestone designed by local architect J. Roy White and opened in 1933; it served as the city's main library until 1979. The building showcases wrought ironwork by Fortunat Weigl and interior woodcarving by Swiss immigrant Peter Mansbendel, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. It now houses the local-history collections of the Austin Public Library.
