History

The Old Depot Hotel was built about 1871-72 by Carl Schaeffer near the Houston and Texas Central passenger depot in downtown Austin, and through the 1870s it lodged rail travelers and stagecoach passengers. Over the years it was known by several names, including the Railroad House, Schaeffer's Boarding House, and the St. Louis House. The two-story building wraps three sides of a courtyard, with a curved stairway leading to a second-floor balcony, and it was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1966.
