History

The Susanna Dickinson Museum preserves the 1869 rubble-rock house that furniture maker Joseph Hannig built for his wife, Susanna Dickinson, the "Messenger of the Alamo" who survived the 1836 battle and carried word of its fall to Sam Houston. The couple lived in the home until 1875, and it is the only surviving Dickinson residence. Deeded to the City of Austin in 2003, it was restored and opened as a free museum on Texas Independence Day, March 2, 2010.
