After Austin voters turned down a taxpayer-funded junior college three times in the 1960s, they approved a 1972 plan to run a community college through the Austin Independent School District, and Austin Community College opened in September 1973 with about 2,200 students. Its first home was the Ridgeview Campus in the former Anderson High School building in East Austin, and in 1975 it opened a second campus downtown in the building Austin High School had just vacated, today the Rio Grande Campus and ACC's oldest campus still in use. Voters made ACC an independent college district with its own board and taxing authority in 1986, and it grew into a network of campuses from Round Rock and Cedar Park to Kyle and Elgin. In 2013 ACC opened its Highland Campus on the site of the closing Highland Mall in north Austin, home to the ACCelerator learning lab. Today it is one of the largest community college systems in the country, offering associate degrees, workforce certificates and a handful of bachelor's programs.
