History

Van Zandt County was created on March 20, 1848, from Henderson County and named for Isaac Van Zandt, a leader in the movement to annex Texas to the United States. The first county seat was at Jordan's Saline, where a log courthouse was built and court first met in December 1848; after Wood County was carved off in 1850 the seat moved to Canton. The 1850 census counted 1,348 residents.
