History
The Judge Alexander H. Phillips House in Victoria was built in 1851 by contractor Richard Owens for Alexander Hamilton Phillips (1804-1880), a New York native who moved his law practice to Victoria in the 1840s. The house was built of bricks made and fired at Owens' Guadalupe River brickyard and became a center of local society; Sam Houston reportedly spoke from its front porch during his 1857 campaign for governor. After Samuel Dabney bought it in 1893, architect Jules Leffland remodeled it in Colonial Revival style, stuccoing over the original brick. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
