History
Temple B'nai Israel at 604 N. Main Street is Victoria's historic synagogue and home to the second-oldest Jewish congregation in Texas, organized in 1894 and rooted in a Hebrew Benevolent Society formed in 1867. The current temple was built in 1923 to an eclectic Classical design by noted Victoria architect Jules Leffland and was dedicated on June 5, 1923, with Galveston's Rabbi Henry Cohen officiating. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 among Victoria's historic resources.
