History
John Joseph Linn, an Irish immigrant born in 1798 and affectionately called "Juan" by the region's Mexican colonists, settled at Guadalupe Victoria in 1829 and became a leading merchant. He established a wharf and warehouse at Linnville on Lavaca Bay about 1831 and, fluent in Spanish, served as a liaison between the Mexican and Irish settlers. Linn was Victoria's last alcalde and its first mayor in 1839, served in the Congress of the Republic of Texas, and died in Victoria in 1885.
