History

Farris Chapel Methodist Church in Walker County grew from a settlement begun in 1835 by Tennessee brothers Hezekiah and William Farris. In 1841 the Farris family and neighbors built a church on the north bank of West Sandy Creek that was shared by Methodist, Baptist, and Presbyterian worshipers and also served as a school. A new building replaced the original in 1880, and the church helped give rise to the nearby community of Goshen.
