History
This Greek Revival house in Independence, sometimes called the Root house, was built around 1855. Margaret Lea Houston, widow of Texas statesman Sam Houston, purchased it and lived here in her final years until her death from yellow fever in 1867. Her daughter Maggie occupied the house until 1898, when it passed to the Williams family, who held it until 1983. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 for its association with Mrs. Houston.
