History

The Texas Baptist Historical Museum in Independence occupies a historic church building beside Independence Baptist Church, begun in 1839 and the oldest continuously serving Baptist church in Texas. Known as the "mother church" of Texas Baptists, it is where Sam Houston was baptized in 1854; visitors can sit in his pew and see the bell his mother-in-law, Nancy Moffette Lea, funded in 1856. The museum displays Texana memorabilia and a photographic history of Texas Baptists.
