History
Independence Baptist Church was organized in 1839 by the Rev. Thomas Spraggins and a small group of Baptists and became the leading missionary Baptist church in Texas before the Civil War. The congregation was closely tied to Baylor University and its associated schools while those institutions were located at Independence between 1846 and 1886. Sam Houston joined the church and was baptized in 1854; the present building dates from 1872.
