History
This two-story Greek Revival house near Chappell Hill was built beginning in 1857 by South Carolina native William Wescott Browning and his wife Elizabeth on land in the James Stephens League. Browning was a prominent local figure who helped organize the Washington County Railroad and supported the Chappell Hill Female College and the Methodist Church. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in January 1972 and later designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1983.
