History

Soule University at Chappell Hill was an early Methodist institution and a center of Methodism in Texas, named for Bishop Joshua Soule. College courses began in September 1856, and a three-story stone building was completed in 1861; the university also authorized a medical department in Galveston. Weakened by the region's failure to recover economically after the Civil War, the school declined and closed in 1888.
