History

This Chappell Hill site preserves the bell of the Chappell Hill Female College, a Methodist-affiliated women's college that grew out of the coeducational Chappell Hill Male and Female Institute chartered in 1852. The college closed in 1912, after which its building served as the town's public school until 1926. The bell, cast in 1873, is the last surviving relic of the old college. The school and bell were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
