History
This marker honors the home of John Hoblett Seward (1822-1892), who came to Washington County as a child in 1833. Built in 1855 of hand-sawn cedar, the house anchored a cotton and ranching plantation near Independence. The Seward Plantation was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
