Laredo College was founded in 1947 on the grounds of Fort McIntosh, an Army post on the Rio Grande that operated from 1849 until after World War II. Many of the fort's brick buildings from the 1860s through the 1900s still stand around the old parade ground and are used as classrooms and offices. The fort is on the National Register of Historic Places. This walk starts at the river crossing where Laredo began and moves through the chapel, guardhouse, officers' homes and hospital.

Laredo College was established in the fall of 1946 as Laredo Junior College, and it opened in September 1947 with about 800 students on the grounds of Fort McIntosh, a U.S. Army post founded in 1849 to guard a Rio Grande crossing and closed the year before. Founding president W. J. Adkins led the college until 1960, and many of the fort's original Army buildings, including former officers' quarters, were adapted for classes, offices and housing alongside new construction. Enrollment grew steadily over the following decades, the school took the name Laredo Community College in 1993, and voters approved a $50 million bond that opened a second campus in south Laredo in 2004. After weathering an accreditation probation in 2012–13, the college adopted the name Laredo College in 2018 and today serves Webb, Jim Hogg and Zapata counties.
