History

Mackay Cemetery serves the vanished railroad community of Mackay in central Wharton County, southwest of Wharton on U.S. 59. Mackay began in 1881 as a station on the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway beside a large ranch; rancher A. P. Borden later imported Russian and Chinese laborers, built housing for them near his company store, and in 1912 erected a school for their children. The community had a post office from 1921 to 1937 but had largely disappeared by the late twentieth century.
